The Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Informatics and Information and Communication Technologies is being built by a consortium comprising the following leading Bulgarian institutions: Institute of Information and Communication Technologies (candidate), Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, Institute of Mechanics, National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography (all belonging to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences), Plovdiv University "Paisii Hilendarski", Medical University - Sofia and University of Library Studies and Information Technologies. Associated academic partners are the Institute of Statistics and Mathematical Methods in Economics - TU Vienna and the Fraunhofer Institute of Industrial Mathematics, as well as 6 high-tech Bulgarian companies as associated industrial partners. The leading criterion in the selection of partners is the building of complex capacity at the highest level. The planned activities are in line with the priorities in the thematic area Informatics and ICT of the Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialization of the Republic of Bulgaria for the period 2014-2020. The construction of the infrastructure will be carried out in two stages, including the following: 1) Data center with a capacity of more than 3 PB, including managing servers and servers with large memory for working with Big Data; first stage of the Laboratory for 3D Digitalization and Microstructural Analysis with Micron Resolution; 2) next generation high-performance computing system with high energy efficiency and peak performance above 1 PFOP; second stage of the 3D Digitization Laboratory, including sub-micron resolution CT equipment and dynamic phase contrast. The new infrastructure will be integrated into the European e-infrastructures, thus providing access to resources in EGI and PRACE. The activity of the new CoVE is aimed at creating an integrated scientific-research electronic environment for solving current problems of high scientific and public importance.
